About Me

Husni Mubarak Zainal is a medical doctor, global health professional, humanitarian worker, published writer, and avid traveller. He was born into a traditional Buginese merchant family from Sidrap and raised in the heart of Makassar, Indonesia. During his childhood, he spent time exploring markets, assisting with his family’s business, and reading about distant places. His father, an enthusiastic businessman and seasonal fisherman, frequently took the family on sailing trips across the Celebes archipelago, where Husni spent hours exploring islands and beaches.

During college, Husni developed a passion for aid-based activities and community organisation. This passion led him to various assignments, ranging from providing medical aid in conflict zones and natural disasters to working with medical charities. After graduating from medical school and starting his professional career as a doctor, Husni decided in 2011 to depart from the conventional medical path and pursue his passion for humanitarian work. Upon being accepted as international staff for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), Husni embarked on a series of humanitarian missions, providing medical care in some of the world’s most unstable regions. It was during this time that he also discovered a passion for writing.

Some of his articles have been published in the national newspaper Kompas and on the MSF Southeast Asia website. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Al-Khairaat Medical Faculty in Palu (Central Sulawesi) and has delivered student lectures at University College London.

Currently residing in Edinburgh and pursuing higher specialty training, whilst remains as trustee for MSF. Husni can be reached via email at justhityou@gmail.com
